Ross Douthat Doesn't Have Access to CBO Projections

Wednesday, 25 January 2012 05:34
If Ross Douthat had access to the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) projections that show Social Security will be fully solvent for almost three decades, with no changes whatsoever, and that it could pay more than 80 percent of scheduled benefits after that date for the rest of the century (which is more than current retirees receive), then he would not have attacked President Obama for not having a plan to overhaul Social Security. Therefore, we can conclude that he doesn't have access to CBO's projections.

An Alternative Possibility

May I suggest that Douthat may be aware of those projections? He may be one of those who want to "save" Social Security -- ie. destroy it.

That's really funny Whose Your Nanny. That's like saying people don't have access to health care because they can't afford it even if they did have access.

Stupid liberals.
Perhaps there is another alternative?

Is it possible the Ross Douthat is a dissembling partisan, trying to delude folks, like an old-fashioned snake-oil salesman? I think it is irresponsible not to speculate.
Is Mitt Romney Collecting Social Security?

As of March, he will also be collecting Medicare. No doubt he needs the help even though he hasn't been paying into SS or Medicare since his income is from carried interest.

He also was able to give $100 million tax free to his kids due to carried interest. Yeah, that seems fair!
Keep it up!

douthat is kind of like izzatso, playing with a deck of 51.

@mel in oregon --

No, I think both Asshat and izzatso have decks of 52 cards, it's just that all the cards are jokers.

Hoosier Nannys

What's really frightening is that President Obama really does have a plan for "reorganizing Social Security" and will unveil it - even push it through congress - in an effort to compromise with the crazies.
more flatter tax, yes.

apparently there will be increases in the flat tax portion of federal revenues. Currently, the 12.5% stops at like $106,000, and social security checks will eventually be paid out of general revenues (progressive taxes) as the "bonds" in the fund are cashed in. This will require more taxes, all else equal. More efficient to raise the limit on the flat portion, which I guess is the offing, maybe up to $250,000 or beyond, rather than paying the checks out of increasing marginal rates.
