Jobs and the Future of the U.S. Economy: Possibilities and Limits

Other participants included Ron Baiman of the Chicago Political Economy Group and Center for Tax and Budget Accountability; Joshua Bivens of the Economic Policy Institute; Mathew Forstater of the Center for Full Employment and Price Stability and University of Missouri, Kansas City; Darrick Hamilton of the New School for Management and Urban Policy and the Center for Economic Policy Analysis; Philip Harvey of the National Jobs for All Coalition and Rutgers University Law School, Camden; and Jeffrey Thompson of the Political Economic Research Institute and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

The Center for Economic and Policy Research co-sponsored the Institute for Women's Policy Research's monthly roundtable on women and the economy.The event featured experts from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to discuss the gender earnings gap, paid leave, and paid sick days. Stephanie Boraas, an economist at the Division of Labor Force Statistics at the Bureau of Labor Statistics; Rachel Krantz-Kent, branch chief of the American Time Use Survey at the Bureau of Labor Statistics; and Bill Wiatrowski, associate commissioner for the Office of Compensation and Working Conditions at the Bureau of Labor Statistics took part in the discussion. |

Nicole Woo, director of domestic policy at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, participated in a briefing titled, "Making the Case Against Raising the Retirement Age," sponsored by the Older Women's Economic Security Task Force of the National Council of Women's Organizations and Social Security Matters. Other participants included Ashley Carson, from the Voice of Midlife and Older Women; Monique Morrissey, from the Economic Policy Institute; and Maria Freese, from the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. Terry O'Neill from the National Organization for Women will moderate.

Dean Baker to Deliver Keynote Address at JOBS NOW Coalition Meeting

CEPR Co-Director Dean Baker spoke at the JOBS NOW Annual Meeting at the Minnesota Nurses Association headquarters in St. Paul. Minnesota's JOBS NOW Coalition has seen recent victories in establishing family-supporting wages and benefits in the Minnesota Nurses Association's settlement with Twin Cities hospitals. And there has been a public outcry against letting Minnesota restaurant servers' earnings drop any further below a family-supporting wage than they already are. Baker talked about his epic struggle with the economics profession. He has dedicated his career to breaking down the barriers to understanding the economy and how it works. Or, more precisely, how it doesn't work. Best of all, he uses the tools of the profession to distinguish between reality-based economics and its academic counterpart. |

CEPR Co-Director Dean Baker discussed and signed copies of his latest book, Taking Economics Seriously at Politics and Prose. In the book, Baker argues that the free market is a myth, given corporate interests in government interventions. Recognizing who really benefits from regulations would allow for innovative approaches, and among his recommendations is applying marginal cost pricing to health care.

"South of the Border" Press Conference with Oliver Stone, Mark Weisbrot and Tariq Ali

Oliver Stone, the award-winning film director of movies including "JFK" and "Platoon," spoke at a press conference on June 23, 2010. Stone, whose latest film is "South of the Border," talked about the movie, making it and the political issues it addresses. The movie, which was released in June, examines Latin American political leaders. Stone and his crew filmed South American leaders including Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and Argentina's Cristina Kirchner for the film highlighting leftward-shifting politics among Latin American leaders. Stone answered questions along with Tariq Ali and Mark Weisbrot, who worked the film's screenplay.
