Something I remember my mother telling me nearly 50 years ago -- when American marriages break up, it is usually because of economic stresses. The poor know how and why marriage almost never works under their circumstances. Much of the former middle class has this figured out. Speaking as a woman, it appears to me that hardships like economic downturns cause men to blame themselves, and they tend to abandon their families out of shame. It really doesn't matter if there is a marriage certificate or not. Of course two income earners are better than one, but when there is little chance of being able to get into the middle class (i.e., can't afford the college degree that this now requires), relationships have such a high failure rate that marriage only complicates matters and shuts the door on at least the remote chance of economic success for either party. You can lecture about the moral and social necessity of solid marriages all you want, but it won't change the reality. - DHFabian
