It is all about his ego: he doesn't give a crap about what the data show about the failure of charter schools not only not to meet their promised results, but not even to outperform neighborhood schools; or about the unreliability of testing as a method to evaluate teacher performance. If they're cheaper on average, then it would still be worthwhile to have them even if they don't outperform public schools. I am eager to see if their results fall in the Diane Ravitch reform camp (as you site) or the Wendy Kopp/Michelle Rhee/Democrats for Education Reform camp, which still sees room for charters in the public education system.
