Good points, Rachel. Problem is, I have health insurance and they have already bargained with the providers. Turns out I can't pay cash even, they have to file with my carrier! - David

If only the deficit hawks weren't more hawkish about the pretax health dollars

After all, we are said to lose $250 billion a year because of that exclusion.

Moreover, it contributes to high earners' stupidity with regards to health insurance. I mean stupidity literally: blurry vision, carelessness, indifference and all that. American health care is overpriced, ultimately, because too many of us are don't bother to bargain. And the tax exclusion is a good reason for high-income indifference.

Of course the deficit hawks could also be more hawkish about the mortgage deduction, which leads to other forms of stupidity, as well as taking from lower-income workers.
