The Political Exile of Ecuador’s Rafael Correa

August 07, 2020

CEPR senior policy analyst and Ecuador’s former foreign minister Guillaume Long talked to This Is Hell about lawfare, the barring of former president Rafael Correa’s party from the ballot, and Ecuador’s turn toward austerity and the IMF under Moreno.

Ecuador’s right-wing and its media were “unhappy with progressive governance and the return of … a national project in favor of the Ecuadorian people … moving away from being the US’ backyard,” Long points out.

“The hard right, with this neoliberal project, has essentially tried to subvert the course of democracy. In Brazil, they barred Lula from running … In Bolivia right now, they’re trying to block the most popular party.”
