The State of the Unions in 2009: A Profile of Union Membership in Los Angeles, California and the Nation

September 2009, Lauren D. Appelbaum and Ben Zipperer

For several decades, the nation’s unionization rate – the percentage of all employed wage and salary workers who are union members – had suffered serious decline. There has been a slight uptick over the past two years, however, countering the long-term downward trend. The unionization rate has risen almost one half of a percentage point in the two years since 2006-2007, from 12.0% to the current rate of 12.4%.
